Cloudy, overcast skies did not dampen enthusiasm on Saturday as about a hundred visitors stopped by Tryphon Farm Alpacas for National Alpaca Open Farm Day. Maegan Burkart of Little Patch Alpacas was our co-host for this years' event, and we are grateful for her creativity and enthusiasm, which added so much positive energy to the occasion.
Maegan and my daughter, Leanne, did a terrific job guiding our guests around the animal barns and answering questions. Kathy B., who graciously agreed to demonstrate spinning for the day, impressed us as well with her quiet kindness and good humor. Caitlyn Davis and her friend Claire assisted budding fiber artists in creating small felted "snakes" with funny eyes! Plenty of crayons and glitter kept our younger visitors content too. Our Maria kept the youngest of our "farm hands," Isaac and Brock Burkart, happy and occupied. Thanks to my husband, Dick, for keeping parking orderly and safe, and for making the deli run at lunch time...Karla Davis was just recovering from a bad cold, but added her energy where she was needed for the day as well. And I can't forget our sweet Amanda, who was up at 6 am helping to move furniture around, get the animals tended to, and then headed off for her Early Childhood Education class in the am, and her job in the afternoon. What a gift to have such generous, hard working family memebers and friends!
These events are so enjoyable because people who love animals and natural fibers show up! More than one of these enthusiastic visitors offered to come to volunteer on the farm! (I am giving deep and serious thought to this possibility!) It is so good for my girls to be reminded that they are blessed to have this farm work as part of their lives, as they were aware on Saturday. The interest our visitors showed, and the delight of some of the children experiencing the alpacas close up, so pleased our daughters! And how fun for Karla that one of her friends from Leaves of Learning stopped by with her parents: a geat surprise!
Some of the lovely families we'd met a couple weeks earlier at our garage sale also returned to see the farm. We hope they'll stop back many times to visit and to see the changes on the farm...
